California Schools Curriculum to Include Sikh Information

Budget Crisis May Delay New Textbooks

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law this month an education bill to complete a new history and social studies framework for public schools that includes teaching about the religion, history and culture of its Sikh immigrants. Once the curriculum framework is adopted by the education board, supplemental materials will immediately become available to all schools for use in classes, possibly by 2014, said State Sen. Loni Hancock. Publishers will begin revision of text books. But the schools’ ability to purchase text books will be determined in November when the state votes on the governor’s tax initiative.

Surprise Right at the Hate Crimes Hearing

In a room full of Sikhs, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, engaged New York University Prof. James Jacobs in a debate on the merits of hate crimes laws. Sitting next to Harpreet Singh Saini, son of Wisconsin gurdwara shooting victim, Paramjit Kaur, Jacobs testified that bias laws were “unnecessary” and “divisive.” Amardeep Singh, programs director at the Sikh Coalition, later said the professor’s views “missed the boat.”

Justice and FBI to Consider Tracking Hate Crimes Against Sikhs

Decision Expected in October

The government will consider collecting statistics on hate crimes against Sikhs, a justice department official said yesterday at a Senate committee hearing. The announcement came ahead of a graphic and emotional testimony from Harpreet Singh Saini’s, whose mother, Paramjit Kaur, was killed by a white supremacist last month at the Wisconsin gurdwara. He and others pressed officials to track crimes against Sikhs to better understand and address the issue.

Sikhs Initiated California’s Employment Law

Initiated by the Sikh community, California on Saturday passed the most comprehensive employment rights law that puts the burden of proof on employers to specify their economic hardship in denying religious accommodations. And, unlike any other state, California employers cannot use segregation – hiding a religiously observant employee from the public - as a means of accommodation. The law will take effect on Jan. 1, 2013, and will benefit Sikhs and nearly two million members of other minority religions in the state.

An Historic Invocation

Ishwar Singh, president of Gurdwara Sikh Society of Central Florida, delivered the first Sikh invocation last week at the Republication National Convention in Tampa. With little time to prepare and last-minute changes by party officials, the speech was not the best it could have been, but it brought Sikhs into the limelight, experts said.
