SALDEF Gala Highlights Civil Rights Champions and Accomplishments

Founded in 1996 as a volunteer organization, SALDEF portrays itself as the oldest Sikh civil rights group in the United States. It’s focus on media analysis and education expanded in 2000 to include legal services. The advocacy group has a full-time staff in Washington and Southern California, which works on civil rights, legislative, employment and accommodation issues.

Federal Employment Commission Cannot Handle All Discrimination Cases

WASHINGTON - While the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed two lawsuits on the same day last month regarding the discrimination of two Sikh men, it also recently rejected a third case, which is now being taken up by a civil rights group.

Julio Ore Perez lay awake under local anesthesia at a hospital in Lima, Peru, while a Sikh surgeon worked to replace his knees, for free. Perez could only see the curtain between him and the surgical team. But when they finished and pulled the curtain back, he could not believe his eyes. His legs were straight again, after more than six years.
